Privacy Policy

Loupe is an open-source visual-feedback tool. It lets you inspect an element on a web page, attach a comment, and capture a screenshot or a short screen recording, then send that feedback to a Loupe backend that you or your organization control. This policy explains exactly what data Loupe handles and how.

What Loupe handles

• Settings you enter — your project key, a display name/identifier, and the URL of your Loupe backend. These are stored locally in your browser via chrome.storage and are never sent anywhere except to the backend you configure.
• Feedback you create — only when you actively leave a comment: the comment text, a screenshot of the visible page, and the selected element's HTML and computed styles. This is sent to the backend URL you configured, so your development team can act on it.
• Screen recordings you create — only when you actively use the Record tool. Recording is initiated by you and uses your browser's standard screen-share prompt (getDisplayMedia); you choose what to share and can stop at any time. The captured video is cropped to the region you selected, and — like screenshots — is sent only to the backend you configured. Loupe never starts a recording on its own.

What Loupe does not do

• It does not collect or transmit any data in the background. It only runs on a tab after you explicitly click the Loupe icon and press "Start Loupe on this tab."
• It does not track your browsing history, and it does not use third-party analytics or advertising.
• It does not sell or transfer your data to third parties.
• It does not use your data for any purpose unrelated to delivering the feedback you create.

Where your data goes

Feedback is sent only to the backend endpoint you configure in the extension's settings. That backend is operated by you or your organization (the Loupe server is open source and self-hosted). If no endpoint is configured, feedback stays in your browser's local storage and is not transmitted at all. Loupe's authors do not operate a shared server and never receive your data.

Permissions

• activeTab — to run only on the tab you activate Loupe on, so it can show the feedback control panel and capture a screenshot of that tab.
• scripting — to inject the feedback control panel into the current page when you start Loupe.
• storage — to remember your settings locally between sessions.

Data retention & deletion

Local settings are removed when you uninstall the extension or clear the extension's storage. Feedback stored on your configured backend is controlled by you — delete it there at any time (for example, from the Loupe dashboard).

If this policy changes, the "Last updated" date above will change and the revised version will be posted at this URL.
